OK, so I am not usually a ranter, but I must tell you all about our family movie experience last night.
Happy Feet opened this weekend! Yeah! Kid-friendly movie; something for the whole family! We have taken Mac and Gwyneth to see Curious George and Cars, and everything went well, so we had no issues taking them to see this movie. Gwyneth has also seen March of the Penguins and really liked it, so I thought she'd really like this movie. So of course not being "responsible parents" we told the kids that we were going to see Happy Feet before we had done further research on the film. So while the kids were napping Fred jumped online to find movie times, and to see what some had said about the movie. Well...many people did not have great things to say about the movie, so then I decided to call my sister to see what she and her kids thought of the movie, since I knew they'd already seen it. Well, she told me her opinion, but wanted to know what I thought.
So we headed out to the movie last night, full of promise, looking forward to some good animation, fun songs, and all in all a fun family movie! Well, we were in for a BIG surprise!!!! OK. Here is my beef-if you are going to make a kid's movie, make a kid's movie. Don't advertise something as one thing, and then make it into something completely different! There was some good animation, fun songs, but seriously, half way through the movie I asked Fred if somehow they had secretly changed the movie reel from Happy Feet to Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, or as I called it (accidentally) An Inconceivable Truth? COME ON!!!! Now I guess we aren't supposed to eat fish too, because the penguins and eagles in the Antarctic are hungry! Now as I mentioned, we have seen March of the Penguins, a REAL penguin documentary, and I saw nothing in there about hungry penguins, well aside for the crazy hunger they bring upon themselves with their bizarre migrating/breeding habits-see the movie for clarification. :)
Bottom line. If you want to see an AMAZING penguin movie, rent March of the Penguins.
Or watch "Go Diego Go" Macky the Macaroni Penguin, or Pepito's Penguin School.
If you want to be "up to your a#! in penguins" (quote from a client of my mom's referring to her impressions of her trip to Antarctica) plan a trip to Antartica!
If you want to be bombarded by the leftist Hollywood agenda masked as a fun kid's movie, go see Happy Feet! Robin Williams wasn't even all that good. :( Better to "see" him do the voice of the Genie in Aladdin.
